Aging: What it means to gay men

It is often said that life gets better as people get older. For gay people, however, coming into terms with aging can be a lot more difficult.

In a Psychology Today article, Dr. Michael C. LaSala, explains that growing older can be particularly challenging for gay men due to the gay male culture, which largely focuses on beauty, youth, and sexual attractiveness. Thus, gay men who are bound to live longer must face the challenge of their declining attractiveness in the society.

Another factor that leads to depression is the lack of support from families and friends. A survey published by The Guardian notes that thousands of gay people are growing older without the same family and support structures that many straight people enjoy.

For the LGBT community, the prospect of solitary living in their old age has become a consistent problem. Because compared to their heterosexual peers, they feel less secured in many aspects of their lives and are not confident of having the life support they need as they grow age.

To age gracefully and happy, experts suggest that gay men must learn to dismantle the idea of real beauty by committing to look beyond the surface of physical attractiveness. Furthermore, they must also strive to get comfort and support from the people who understand them.

Ultimately, they must remind themselves are also entitled to live their senior years in a healthy, loving, and accepting environment.
