According to research by the the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation, an estimated three million Americans over the age of 65 are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The population is predicted to reach four million by 2030.

Retirement communities geared specifically towards the LGBT community are a new development, but one that's sorely needed to address the issues of aging in the LGBT community. Many retirees have expressed concern about inherent discrimination either from staff or other residents they are likely to encounter in traditional, “straight” retirement communities and assisted living facilities. There is also a real fear that growing old means having to leave their freedoms and individuality behind.

LGBT retirees need the options that other segments of the population have: the right to live independently, to be part of a community with like-minded individuals, and to have opportunities to be social and active and inherently themselves. Located in gay-friendly Santa Fe, New Mexico, RainbowVision is one facility that strives to meet these needs and more.

The resort-style facility offers independent, assisted, and traditional living options, and has been providing a safe haven for LGBT seniors since its establishment in 2006. It features a lounge, a fitness center and spa, a full service salon, and a bevy of entertainment and leisure options.

The city of Santa Fe also provides plenty of opportunities for fun and socialization: the city boasts a number of world-class restaurants, museums, clubs, even an opera. It also has a gay and lesbian index of 201, way above the national norm.

Many residents have formed great friendships and act as each other's support systems.

The community is multicultural, diverse, and prejudice-free. At RainbowVision Santa Fe, retirees can look forward to living in an environment that promotes and values openness and individuality.
